One way, two rivers, three countries
Along the Neisse up to the Oder
On the drive along the eastern border of Germany, which is naturally marked by the rivers Neisse and Oder, the blue glittering surface of the water, green overgrown Neisse meadows, refreshing rustling pine forests and sunny yellow rapeseed fields ensure a colorful enjoyment of nature. At the same time, cyclists travel a route full of history. From the source of the Neiße at the southernmost point of the tour in Nová Ves (CZ), it goes to Zittau, with its baroque town houses, the pretty town hall and the mighty salt house at the foot of the Zittau Mountains Nature Park. The city is best known for the Lenten towels, which amaze thousands of visitors every year. They are part of the trinational tourist route Via Sacra, which also includes the St. Marienthal Monastery in Ostritz. The stations of the Via Sacra promise calm and reflection. The wheels roll down the river to Görlitz - the city that became rich as a trading hub and today enchants city tourists with a lovingly restored old town and outstanding buildings such as the old town bridge, St. Peter's Church, the Holy Sepulcher or the Kaisertrutz.
Görlitz and Zittau once united, together with Bautzen, Kamenz, Löbau and Lauban (Lubań /PL), to form the Upper Lusatian Six Cities League. This protective alliance was founded in Löbau in 1346 and existed for almost half a millennium. Families can treat themselves to a break from cycling with the leisure activities in Oberlausitz. Not far from the Oder-Neisse cycle path, narrow-gauge railways, zoos, indoor and outdoor play parks and moving water worlds invite you to enjoy family fun. The last stop on the way in Saxony, the Fürst-Pückler-Park Bad Muskau, was even awarded the title of World Heritage Site by UNESCO for the landscape park fantasy of Prince Pückler. About 20 kilometers north of Guben in Brandenburg, the Neisse flows into the Oder near Ratzdorf. From here it is a good 400 kilometers with many other attractions to the island of Usedom.
